Multistate Exams


For additional information on any of the following nationally administered exams, click on the name of the exam from the list below.
  • MBE - The Multistate Bar Examination is a six-hour, two-hundred question multiple-choice examination covering contracts, torts, constitutional law, criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, and real property. All jurisdictions administer the MBE except Washington state and Louisiana. Applicants should contact the jurisdiction where admission is being sought to ascertain when and how the MBE is administered.


  • MPT - The Multistate Performance Test consists of two 90-minute skills questions covering legal analysis, fact analysis, problem solving, resolution of ethical dilemmas, organization and management of lawyering task, and communication. Applicants should contact the jurisdiction where admission is being sought to ascertain whether one or more MPTs are part of the jurisdiction's examination.


  • MEE - The Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) is a collection of 30-minute essay questions drafted by the NCBE for use by state boards of bar examiners. The NCBE has traditionally offered nine MEE essay questions from which to choose, with most jurisdictions selecting to administer six of those nine. Applicants should contact the jurisdiction where admission is being sought to ascertain whether the MEE is part of the jurisdiction's examination.


  • MPRE - The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination is a sixty question, two-hour and five minute, multiple-choice examination. The MPRE is required for admission to the bars of all but three US jurisdictions. Applicants are advised to contact the jurisdictions directly for the most current information regarding passing scores, rules, and policies.
