Bar Exam Format

Missouri is adopting the NextGen UBE in July 2026.

The NextGen UBE replaces the traditional Uniform Bar Exam (UBE®) with a shorter, integrated format designed to test real-world lawyering skills alongside legal knowledge. This new exam places greater emphasis on applying practical skills, such as selecting appropriate lawyering strategies for a given situation, considering ethical implications, and identifying and applying effective legal research tactics rather than relying heavily on memorization.

Multiple Choice Questions

While the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) will no longer be a part of the NextGen UBE, multiple-choice questions remain a critical component. Standalone multiple-choice questions account for 49% of the total NextGen UBE score. There are two standalone multiple-choice question types: 1) Select 1 correct answer from 4 options 2) Select 2 correct answers from 6 options.

Performance Tasks

Performance tasks require candidates to apply fundamental lawyering skills in realistic situations using a closed-universe case file and library. There are two types of performance tasks: 1) Drafting type 2) Research type.

Drafting tasks involve a legal analysis and drafting assignment such as writing a memo, letter, or brief. Research-type tasks combine multiple-choice and short-answer questions followed by a medium-length writing assignment. Performance tasks make up 30% of the total NextGen UBE score.

Integrated Question Sets

New integrated question sets are designed to assess doctrinal law along with lawyering skills. Each question set begins with a common fact scenario and may include supplemental materials such as excerpts of statutes, judicial opinions, or other documents. There are two types of integrated question sets: 1) Counseling type and 2) Drafting type. Counseling type sets include 6 questions: 2 multiple-choice and 4 short-answer questions spanning multiple subject areas. Drafting type sets require candidates to draft or edit a legal document. Integrated question sets make up 21% of the total NextGen UBE score.

My constant dialogue with the Themis staff helped me avoid feeling overwhelmed and optimized my study time. Without the personalized support, quick response time and such a flexible/adaptable program, I would've been in heaps of trouble. I still cannot fathom why anyone would pay double or triple for an inferior product. Thanks Themis!
